Aosta
Capital of Valle d’Aosta
We arrive in Aosta, the capital and a city founded by the Romans, who named it Augusta Praetoria in honor of Emperor Augustus. Here, you can enjoy numerous well-preserved Roman ruins, as well as shops selling traditional Valdostan crafts and local gastronomic products on the main street. Aosta is also a transit point for the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome. In the Aosta Valley section, it descends from the Gran San Bernardo and continues along the central valley to Pont-Saint-Martin.
From Aosta, several bus lines can take you to natural gems: Colle del Gran San Bernardo (line 422, operational only in summer); visit the Gran San Bernardo Hospice Museum, home to the famous dogs and exhibits on local nature: mineralogy, fauna, flora, and climate.
Descending along the Grande Valley (Coumba Freida in Valdostan dialect) towards Aosta, don’t miss the prosciutto factory where the famous Jambon de Bosses is made, and further down, the equally renowned Prosciutto di Saint-Oyen.
Fénis – Saint-Barthélemy
With its elegant castle and nearly thousand-year history, Fénis offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the ancient history of the valley, dating back to the 12th-13th centuries (Château De Fénis). Not far from Fénis, you’ll find another famous delicatessen in the Aosta Valley, renowned for its Saint Marcel prosciutto.
Accessible from Aosta via line 775, Saint-Barthélemy offers a unique nighttime experience. Thanks to the Saint Barthelemy Astronomical Observatory, recognized in Italy, you can spend pleasant hours gazing up and admiring the beauty and mystery of the sky above us.
Roman Theatre
A Timeless Spectacle
In the immediate vicinity of Porta Prætoria, along the Decumanus Maximus, stands one of the most iconic ancient monuments of Aosta, the Roman Theatre.
Dating back to the first half of the 1st century AD, this imposing building is a masterpiece of High Imperial Roman architecture that still leaves visitors speechless today. Encountering the building occurs in a highly impactful landscape context, where the high peaks surrounding the city enhance the soaring presence of the mighty 22-meter-high façade wall, which rises over an urban and archaeological area of fascinating richness.
MEDIA and BASSA VALLE
Discover the beauty of the Media and Basse Valle by visiting Châtillon and Saint-Vincent, centers rich in history and wellness, and venture to Valtournenche/Cervinia to experience the thrill of the majestic alpine peaks and the renowned ski resorts at the foot of the Matterhorn.
Chatillon – Saint Vincent
From Aosta, taking the 110 line, you can travel through the entire Media/Bassa Valle, conveniently reaching:
Châtillon, which in ancient times was one of the most important villages in the region, evidenced by the presence of numerous castles and towers. The most well-known, Castello Gamba, was built in a panoramic position on the rocky spur of Crêt-de-Breil, overlooking the Dora Baltea. The castle was created as a love tribute from Baron Gamba to his beloved wife Angélique Passerin d’Entrèves, who was originally from Châtillon.
Saint-Vincent, known as the “Riviera of the Alps,” is famous for its thermal baths, where you can relax in an oasis of wellness. Don’t miss the famous Casinò de la Vallée for an entertaining evening.
